# Why LoWisa Teaches Instead of Writing the Code for You

> AI can write code faster than anyone can read it. That makes understanding more valuable, not less. Why LoWisa is built to teach rather than to generate.

There has never been an easier time to produce code, and never a more common way to be stuck: a working program you cannot explain, cannot change safely and cannot fix when it breaks at the worst moment.

## Existing is not the same as yours

Code you generated exists. Code you understand is yours. The gap between the two stays invisible until something goes wrong: a bug in production, a question in an interview, a change nobody on the team can make with confidence.

AI tools are very good at closing the first gap, from nothing to working code. Almost none of them are built to close the second, from working code to code you own.

## What a tool built to teach does differently

| Built to generate | Built to teach |
| --- | --- |
| Answers the question you asked | Works out the question you should have asked |
| Measured by output | Measured by what you can do afterwards |
| Finishes when it compiles | Finishes when you can explain it |
| Makes you faster today | Makes you better next month |

Both have a place. We think the second is the one people are missing, and it is the one that decides who is still useful when the tools change again.

## How that shapes LoWisa

- **Lessons are taught, not handed over.** The tutor explains, asks, and checks. See [AI coding tutor](/learn/ai-coding-tutor/).
- **Every level ends with a check.** A checkpoint and flashcards on the real topics, because recognising something is not knowing it. See [Checkpoints and flashcards](/help/checkpoints-and-flashcards/).
- **Your own code is the best textbook.** The desktop IDE teaches inside your real project, including code an AI wrote for you. See [How to understand AI-generated code](/learn/understand-ai-generated-code/).
- **Learning follows you.** The phone app teaches the same way, so the bus ride counts. See [Can you learn to code on your phone?](/learn/learn-to-code-on-your-phone/)

## The test we hold ourselves to

After a session with LoWisa, can you do something you could not do before, without LoWisa open? If yes, we did our job. If you only got code, we did not.

## Learn it so it stays

LoWisa is on Google Play and the App Store, and on the desktop for Windows 10+, macOS 12+, Ubuntu 20.04+.
