# How to Study by Listening

> When audio learning works, when it does not, and how to combine listening with reading and self-testing so a commute or a walk becomes real study time.

Most people have more time with their ears free than with their eyes free: the commute, a walk, chores, the gym. Audio can turn that time into study, but only if it is used for the right job.

## What listening is good for

- **The big picture.** Hearing how the ideas of a topic connect, before or after you study the details.
- **Explanations in plain language.** A conversation about an idea often lands where a dense page did not.
- **Second exposure.** Hearing a level again after you studied it is cheap, useful revision.
- **Motivation.** Listening to a topic being discussed makes it feel alive, which makes the next study session easier to start.

## What listening is not good for

Listening alone is weak for exact detail: formulas, code, dates and definitions. It is also passive; you can hear a whole episode and retain little. Pair it with work that makes you produce answers.

## A routine that combines both

1. **Listen first for the shape.** Before studying a level, listen to it once on the move. Do not take notes.
2. **Study the level properly.** Read or work through the lessons with full attention, examples included.
3. **Test yourself.** Answer the checkpoint and the flashcards from memory.
4. **Listen again as revision.** A day or two later, listen to the same level. Pause when something does not sound familiar, and note it.

Two hosts talking an idea through tend to be easier to follow than a single voice reading, because questions, restatements and examples happen naturally in conversation.

## Listening in LoWisa: Insight mode

Insight mode turns a course into a two-host show: two voices talk each level through like a podcast, so you can learn in the car, on a walk or eyes free. It keeps playing with the screen off, and Level 0 of the app's own courses has a free episode. Insight mode is included in LoWisa Plus and LoWisa Plus Max. See [Insight mode](/help/insight-mode/) for how to start an episode.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can you learn effectively by listening?

Yes, for overviews, explanations and revision. For exact detail such as formulas, code or definitions, pair listening with reading and self-testing.

### Are podcasts good for studying?

A podcast that follows your own course level by level is a good way to preview and revise. Listening once before a study session and once a few days after works well.

### Can I listen to my course with the screen off?

In LoWisa, Insight mode keeps playing in the background with the screen off.

## Listen to your courses

Level 0 of the app's own courses has a free Insight episode.
