How LoWisa teaches

How LoWisa Strengthens Cognitive Abilities

LoWisa is an AI-assisted learning platform designed to strengthen cognitive abilities by helping learners comprehend information, develop deeper understanding, practise what they learn, and confidently apply their knowledge and skills in real-world environments.

This page explains what that means in practice: the problem it answers, the four steps every LoWisa lesson follows, and the seven thinking skills it trains.

The problem: answers without understanding

Many people worry that AI weakens how students think. Without a plan, that worry is justified: when a tool hands over a finished answer, the reasoning that produced it never reaches the learner, and the ability to work it out alone fades.

The problem is older than AI. Learners have long been able to pass a course without being able to explain or use what it covered, and a grade that hides a gap does not close it. What closes a gap is working through it until you can do the thing yourself.

LoWisa is built on that idea. The AI does the work of a patient teacher, not the work of the learner.

Four steps in every lesson

StepWhat it meansHow LoWisa does it
ComprehendTake in new information and make sense of itLessons on any subject at your level, built from a topic you name or from your own notes, slides and pictures, explained in plain words and spoken aloud
Understand deeplyKnow why, not only whatThe tutor asks you to explain ideas back, checks your reasoning, and shows how the parts of a system connect
PractiseUse it until it sticksA checkpoint and a flashcard deck at the end of every level, revision at growing intervals, and lessons you can listen to as a conversation
Apply with confidenceDo it in a real situationHands-on practicals done the way the work is done in real jobs, your own real projects in the desktop app, speaking and interview practice out loud

A level is finished when you can explain it and use it, not when you have read it.

Seven thinking skills used in real work

Beyond any single subject, LoWisa trains the reasoning that carries across subjects. In the desktop app these are taught through practical situations rather than abstract exercises.

  • Pattern recognition: seeing the shape a problem shares with ones you have solved before.
  • Probability and uncertainty: deciding well when you cannot be sure.
  • Optimisation: finding the best use of limited time, money or resources.
  • Systems thinking: understanding how parts affect each other, so a change in one place does not surprise you in another.
  • Trade-offs: knowing what you give up for what you gain.
  • Decision-making: choosing, committing and explaining why.
  • Root cause analysis: fixing the reason a problem happened, not only its symptom.

Why repetition is part of the design

Understanding something once is not the same as keeping it. Every LoWisa level comes back to what you learned: a checkpoint from memory, flashcards that return just before you would forget, and the same ideas met again in a different form. Retrieving an idea is what makes it last.

Where to start

On Google Play and the App Store, the LoWisa app teaches any subject level by level, turns your own notes into revision, and adds speaking, interview and career practice. On Windows 10+, macOS 12+, Ubuntu 20.04+, the desktop app teaches inside real projects with a live tutor. Both are free to start. See Master any topic, Checkpoints and flashcards and Learning with the tutor for how each part works.

Frequently asked questions

Does using AI weaken cognitive abilities?

It can, when the AI does the thinking and hands over finished answers. Used as a teacher that asks you to explain, practise and apply, AI can strengthen cognitive abilities instead.

How does LoWisa strengthen cognitive abilities?

Every lesson follows four steps: comprehend the information, understand it deeply by explaining it back, practise it with checkpoints and spaced flashcards, and apply it in real situations. LoWisa also trains seven thinking skills used in real work.

Which thinking skills does LoWisa train?

Pattern recognition, probability and uncertainty, optimisation, systems thinking, trade-offs, decision-making and root cause analysis.

Is LoWisa only for coding?

No. LoWisa teaches any subject at any level on the phone app. The desktop app adds hands-on teaching inside real projects, including software.
